My pursuit in photography stems from a genuine interest in people, places and social issues. I specializes in event photography, portraiture, photojournalism and commercial photography. I strive to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera as that is when our best self shows through in a photograph.
A native to South Florida, I grew up building cardboard box forts in the orange groves of the town of Davie and as soon as I could drive, would cruise Fort Lauderdale beach. During college, I traded the ocean for mountain air to study photojournalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Post graduation, my desire to gain a better understanding of the world and other cultures led me to teach English to high school students in Kyushu, Japan followed by teaching Buddhist monks in Dharamshala, India.
When I returned home to Florida, I became a freelance writer and photographer for Forum Publishing and the Sun Sentinel while continuing to expand my photography to magazines, nonprofit organizations plus corporate events and portraits. Kara Starzyk Photography has continued to thrive for a decade - time flies when you're having fun!
It was on a photo shoot, that I met the incredible man who I married. We share a love for the arts, road trips, walks with our dog, helping shelter animals find homes, live music and drives with the top off the Jeep. I am a bonus mother to three wonderful young adults and the time with our family brings me the most joy. Calling Fort Lauderdale home makes me proud and grateful to be working with many of the nonprofit organizations, businesses, and great individuals who makeup this community.
